RG556 – A winning combination. This larger comfortable Android gaming device features a stunning 5.4″ AMOLED display.
When unboxing, the RG556’s size immediately makes an impression, measuring approximately 22cm in width and 9cm in height, accompanied by a striking 5.48-inch AMOLED display that is as pleasing to hold as it is to behold.
This is among Anbernic’s most aesthetically pleasing and comfortable to hold handheld consoles. While we appreciate the RG552, the 556 takes it to the next level.
In terms of performance, the RG556 boasts a T820 processor coupled with the Mali-G57 GPU and 8GB LPDDR4X of RAM, ensuring a seamless gaming experience across a broad spectrum of classic and Android games.
When you purchase your RG556 from Electro Arcade, it will come pre-tested with games imported, so you simply turn on and play!
The AMOLED display truly shines, surpassing rival IPS consoles in quality with ease.
For video output, USB-C support is provided, requiring a dock or USB-C to HDMI cable or adapter, enabling gaming on the go or connection to larger screens as desired.
Out of the box, the RG556 comes loaded with Android 13. When it comes to retro gaming, users have the option to use individual emulators and tweak to their heart’s content, or go with the included Anbernic launcher for convenient browsing and gameplay. Games stored on your micro SD card can be scanned and imported into the launcher for easy browsing by console. The software interface is straightforward, simple to set up and navigate, and performs well.
In gaming performance benchmarks, the RG556 sits below the AYN Odin 2 and AYANEO Pocket Air.
With its larger, high-quality display, swift setup process and finally stacked shoulder buttons, the Anbernic RG556 Android gaming handheld delivers a compelling option for gaming enthusiasts.
With the RG556 we provide an upgraded local brand name Lexar 128GB games card instead of the lower grade stock card.
What games can the RG556 emulate?
A large number of retro games and consoles will emulate on the RG556, including platforms like Gameboy, N64, PS1, and SNES. 4:3 based games perform well with the option to adjust picture scaling for specific consoles.
Now onto the exciting part, we finally have a quality handheld that won’t break the bank and plays a lot of PS2 titles! To get the most out of PS2 emulation you need to run the AetherSX2 emulator and select the Vulkan graphics driver. On the RG556 you will get up to 3x graphics upscaling and as a guide enjoy PS2 titles including Black, Bully, Burnout Revenge, Devil May Cry, Jack and Dexter, Medal of Honour, Mega Man X8, Metal Gear Solid. Burnout 3 played well overall with a few glitches – so you should be able to play a decent amount of the PS2 library.
Netflix?
Yes, Netflix, this device supports the Netflix app and you can even play games if part of your Netflix subscription. That said you can download a ton of Android games just like you would on your phone and use controllers or even touch screen if needed for navigation or gameplay. The downfacing stereo speakers are loud! so gaming and video will sound great.
The headphone jack is conveniently located on the base of the device and while it doesn’t have a HDMI port, you can output audio and video using a type C to HDMI adapter or cable at 1080P.
